An ice cream social was held Sept. 27 at the Portales Senior Center on Industrial Drive. Ten freezers of homemade ice cream and cakes were enjoyed by 30 seniors. The remainder of the evening was devoted to serious (but friendly) competition at the game tables.

Game nights are held regularly at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. All seniors are welcome at the next game night Tuesday.

The senior center is planning a chili cookoff this fall. Watch for date and details.

The Peanut Festival has been a focus for the past few weeks as our quilters produced a quilt to be given away. The ladies in the ceramics room have an assortment of items for sale there as well as a Southwestern patterned kitchen canister set to be given away. Tickets for both are available at the festival. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to purchase renewable supplies for the departments within the center.

Tuesday’s Bridge games continue under the direction of Jerry Beck. Last week Oleta Thornton and Dickie Chandler were in first place and Bob Sanders and Jo Ann Vickers came in second. The Bridge players are pretty consistent in number of players each week and they welcome new players to join them at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays.

Senior Olympics will be held in March and our seniors are expecting to enlist several in each of the events. We are just getting organized and need everyone to participate. Let someone at the center know of your interests or come by the center any weekday for more information. Every senior is welcome.

Card and domino players get together each day. Eighty-eight and 42 players designate Monday and Friday afternoons for their games, but new players are welcome to drop in any weekday. The pool room is always open and computers are available. There is an exercise class from 8-9 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Dot Britton is available to assist with art work on Mondays. Those who enjoy crafts, handwork, sewing or quilting should enlist others and schedule a meeting time to share ideas and work on projects together.

Everything revolves around the kitchen on Thursday’s. Kitchen staff prepares an entree while other dishes are contributed by those in attendance. Many seniors also make Thursday afternoon their game time and spend the afternoon playing Train or a domino game.

Transportation is offered to seniors within the city and within a radius of five miles of the city. Doctor appointments in Clovis must be between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Call the center for transportation needs and to schedule rides.

The center welcomes groups who have like interests. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
