Day Trips: Ballet offers ‘Romantic Evening’

For couples in search of a romantic evening, why not drive to the Lone Star Ballet in Amarillo on Nov. 5 and see the San Diego Ballet perform its version of “A Romantic Evening.”

The performance is a night of contemporary dance set to the sounds of Arthur Murray, Nat King Cole and others. According to promoters, it’s romance filled with humor from the 1940s in the mix.

Where it is:

The performance of “A Romantic Evening” will be held at the Civic Center in Amarillo. The distance is approximately 122 miles one way and should be about a two-hour drive.

From the Portales area take U.S. 70, 26 miles to U.S. 60 going northeast at Texico approximately 95 miles to Interstate 40. Take the Buchanan Street exit and go five to six blocks, staying to the right traveling north.

What it is:

The Lone Star Ballet Inc. has been in the business of dance for 31 years. The company provides training for dancers through its connection with West Texas A&M University. It is with the Lone Star Ballet students obtain dance experience through performances and scholarships that assist them in their studies. Students from Lone Star Ballet have found employment with such noted dance companies as the New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and others.

What to do:

The Lone Star Ballet will begin its season Nov. 5 with “A Romantic Evening,” and will end March 22-23 with a special performance of “Romeo and Juliet” by the Joffrey Ballet.

This performance will feature John Cranko’s choreography and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. The “Nutcracker,” an annually anticipated production of the Lone Star Ballet and the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra, contains more than a $1 million in settings and costumes in the performance. It is slated for Dec. 9-11. Other productions this year and in 2006 are: “The Sleeping Beauty” performed by the Tulsa Ballet, and “The Firebird” performed by the Lone Star Ballet. Tickets start at $15 and range to $30.

According to the Lone Star Ballet, couples will receive a rose as part of their “Date Night” during the upcoming performance of “A Romantic Evening.”
