Eastern New Mexico University’s defensive style kept the Greyhounds in the hunt for a while, but in the end Midwestern State simply proved to be too strong.
The Indians, ranked in the NCAA Division II top 25 for much of the season, broke open a tight match with three goals in a span of just over eight minutes midway through the second half and went on to beat the Hounds 5-1 on Friday in a Southwest Soccer Conference matchup.
Five players scored goals for Midwestern (7-3-1, 5-1-1 SSC), which plays at first-place West Texas A&M on Sunday in an attempt to stay in the hunt for the league’s regular-season title.
“I thought we had a couple of chances early to score,” Midwestern coach Doug Elder said. “The longer they (Hounds) hung in there, I think the more confidence it gave them.”
Leading just 1-0, the Indians got a goal from Jimmy Krueger from close range with nearly 15 minutes gone in the second half, then Daniel Woolard headed in a free kick by Loren Sailsman less than two minutes later.
ENMU countered with a goal from about 25 yards out by junior forward Jonathan Holman, but couldn’t hold off the Indians. Keegan Hudson scored on a penalty kick from inside the box in the 69th minute, and Mark McGlinchey found himself open from close range on the left side for the final goal about 10 minutes later.
“I think getting one before the half was good for us,” Elder said, “but we played much better in the second half.”
Holman’s tally was one of only two shots on goal for the Hounds (3-10-1, 1-7-0) in the match.
ENMU coach Carlos Elizondo, whose squad plays its home finale at noon on Sunday against SSC foe St. Edward’s, said the Hounds were beaten by a better squad.
“They are good at every position,” he said of the Indians. “They have good soccer players who are good athletes.”
Junior forward Brandon Swartzendruber broke the ice just over 30 minutes in, punching in a deflection from close range past ENMU keeper Leif Craddock.
The Hounds had a couple of scoring chances early, but Holman’s header bounced off the post in the first five minutes and another ended in a shot wide of the mark.

Dozier’s first goal came with about 10 minutes left in the half, when she chipped in a crossing pass from Nicole Bregler over East Central goalkeeper Christie Sarginson. Dozier scored less than three minutes later from about 25 yards out.
Dozier added her ninth goal of the season early in the second half on a cross from Jennifer Goodrum. Anna Funck got the final tally in the 74th minute, scoring off a penalty kick.

The Zias (6-13) complete play in the event with matches against Midwestern State and Southeastern Oklahoma at 8 a.m. and noon (MDT) today, respectively.
ENMU had only 26 kills and 19 attack errors in getting thumped by Central Oklahoma (17-6). Kim Morgal (14) and Katie Schult (11) nearly matched the Zias’ kill total by themselves for the Bronchos.
Then, dominated by Commerce in the first two games, Eastern rallied to take the match to a fifth game before the Lions (8-13) prevailed. Junior Grace George collected 16 kills and five block assists for the Zias in that one, while freshman Rhea Wortman had 15 kills and senior Lindsay Schiely added 12 kills and seven block assists.
