Department sets DWI checkpoints

The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department is participating in the Sixth Statewide Superblitz by conducting DWI saturation patrols between today and Oct. 23. During the superblitz, law enforcement numbers will try to get drunk drivers off the road.

Last year, 224 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, according to New Mexico Department of Transportation data. Sgt. Rick Short of the RCSD indicated male drivers ages 21-34 and underage drinkers are among those people most likely to drink and drive.

“Our message to those who drink and drive is very simple — we will get you,” Short said. “So please think twice before you drink and get behind the wheel of your car.”

Water basin meeting Tuesday

Office of the state engineer staff will be available to answer questions regarding the new Causey Lingo underground water basin and the extensions of the Lea County, Fort Sumner and Curry County Underground Water Basins from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Roosevelt County Courthouse County Commission Meeting Room.

On Sept. 23 the state engineer declared administration over six new underground basins and extended boundaries on nine existing basins.

Additional meetings are Oct. 12 in Tatum and Roswell. A hearing on the declarations and extensions will be held in Santa Fe Dec. 9. For more information, contact Yvette Chavez at (505) 827-4130

The following is a sampling of calls taken by the Portales Police Department in the last week.

According to the reports:

Wednesday

• At 7: 52 a.m. a caller reported a broken windshield on South Avenue E.

• At 8:03 a.m. a caller on South Avenue G reported her son was attacked by a male Tuesday on his way home from school.

• At 8:22 a.m. a caller reported she had run over a male on a bike on West First Street. The bike rider refused transport by ambulance.

• At 10:57 a.m. a two-vehicle crash was reported on West First Street, the report didn’t note any injuries.

• At 12:03 p.m. police were called to a fight one East Fifth Street, no arrests were noted.

• At 4:46 p.m. police responded to a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Nogal and North Avenue K.

• At 6:41 p.m. a caller complained of two street bikes racing up and down South Avenue B.

• At 7:24 p.m. a caller reported someone had broken into his garage and gone through items in a vehicle parked inside. It was unknown if anything was taken.

Thursday

• At 4:17 a.m. a sexual assault was reported by a caller on 16th Lane.

• At 6:35 a.m. a caller reported a smashed windshield on her car on South Avenue A.

• Police took a call at 8:30 a.m. of a dog-at-large on South Avenue A.

• Police investigated a case of assault and battery on East Fifth Street at 10:18 a.m.

• At 2:49 p.m. a caller reported a man laying in the alley near West First Street. An ambulance was requested to transport the person.

• At 3:49 p.m. police were called to a non-injury accident on West 18th Street.

• At 4:41 p.m. a caller on West Juniper reported that his tools were stolen.

• Police arrested a subject at 6:07 p.m. at West Campus Apartments on a narcotics violation.

• A motor vehicle theft was reported at 7:07 p.m. on North Abilene. The caller stated a son had taken the father’s truck and refused to tell her where it was at.

Friday

• At 12:30 a.m. a caller reported he had just hit a horse and shattered his windshield on Kilgore near the Cemetery.

• At 12:30 p.m. a caller reported a man acting “crazy” shouting and climbing telephone poles near University and Avenue E.

• At 7:48 a.m. a report was received of subjects that had done “donuts” inside the cemetery with a vehicle and had jumped a fence into a locked area and threw stuff out of the back of a pickup.

• At 11:29 a.m. police took a report of an auto burglary on West Date Street.

Public Record

The following dispositions were recently filed in magistrate court:

Felix Corrales, 19, was found guilty of possession of marijuana (less than 1 oz.) and possesssion of drug paraphenalia and is ordered to serve a 364-day suspended sentence and 364 days of probation, enter the ASPEN program and pay $364 in fines.

Alan Sumner, 25, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and driving on revocation and is ordered to serve a 364-day sentence (357 days suspended) and one year of probation, install an interlock device, enter the ASPEN program, perform 48 hours of community service and pay $1,070 in fines.

Josie Maldonado, 41, pleaded guilty to shoplifting and is ordered to serve a six-month suspended sentence and six months of probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay $267 in fines.

Israel Ornelas, 23, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and battery and is ordered to serve a 364-day suspended sentence and 364 days of probation, enter the ASPEN program and pay $114 in fines.

Michael Hernandez, 22, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphenalia and is ordered to serve a 364-day suspended sentence and 364 days of probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay $242 in fines.

Josh Wilbanks, 19, pleaded guilty to minor in possession and is ordered to serve one year of probation, attend the ASPEN program, complete 30 hours of community service and pay $1,067 in fines ($900 suspended).

Mary Sena, 23, pleaded guilty to driving on revoked license and is ordered to serve 364 days (357 suspended) and 357 days of probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay $375 in fines.

Michael Lovering, 39, was found guilty of driving under the influence of intoxicating drugs, possession of controlled substance (marijuana) and possession of drug paraphenalia and is ordered to serve a 364-day suspended sentence and 364 days probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay $859 in fines.

Joe Garza, 22, pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and is ordered to serve a 364-day sentence (334 days suspended) and 334 days of probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay $242 in fines.

Brandon Schaller, 23, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphenalia and possession of marijuana and is ordered to serve 364 days supervised probation, attend the ASPEN program and pay probation costs.
