LITTLEFIELD, Texas — Portales’ preseason scrimmage at Littlefield saw the Rams somewhat overmatched Friday against the host Wildcats.
Littlefield scored once during a 15-play set, once during a 10-play set and three times in game-type possessions against the Rams.
Portales couldn’t muster a score under the same conditions, but got the ball inside the 5-yard line on the opening 15-play set.
“The word from their head coach is that this is the best group they’ve had in quite some time,” Portales coach Glenn Johnson said. “He’s pretty excited about this group and thinks they’re going to have an opportunity to really compete in their district.”
Circumstances did favor the Wildcats, who have practiced for three weeks and had already been through one scrimmage this fall.
“There were some good things, there were some bright spots,” Johnson said. “On the offensive side of the ball, there were times we protected well, threw the ball well, caught the ball well, ran the ball well.
“We’ve just got to get to the point where we’re consistent.”
Johnson said the defense was consistent. They gave up three big plays, but also had two goal line stands on the evening.
“The thing I’m concerned about right now is our conditioning,” Johnson said. “By the time we got to the game situations, I thought we got a little winded and they took advantage of that.”
Portales opens its season Friday at Greyhound Stadium in a 7 p.m. tilt against West Las Vegas.
