Nine to compete for fair royalty

Nine girls are vying to be crowned as royalty during the Roosevelt County Fair, set for Aug. 22-27 at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.

The Roosevelt County Fair Queen contest will begin with horsemanship 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fairgrounds Arena. The public is welcome to come watch.

A new feature, the speech and modeling portion, will be held at a banquet Tuesday night at the Jake Lopez Building. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Entry to this portion is free.

At 6:30 p.m., a chicken fried steak dinner will be served. Tickets will not be available at the door. They are currently on sale at the fair office (356-4417).

During the two weeks leading up to the fair, reigning royalty and contestants will offer to wash windows for sponsors as a way to thank them for supporting the fair.

Bispo

Leanne Bispo is the 17-year-old daughter of Larry and Jerry Bispo. The senior-to-be at Portales High School is a member of the Rodeo and Show 4-H Club, American Junior Paint Horse Association, Little Wranglers Junior Rodeo Association, the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. She enjoys horseback riding, reading, swimming and sports.

She is the 2003 Roosevelt County Fair Princess and a runner-up for the 2005 princess title. She would like to win Miss Rodeo America, encourage more Roosevelt County girls to enter the competition and major in veterinary science.

She would like to be the fair queen so she could represent the community and the county at the state competition and anywhere else she goes.

Pareo

Iyesha Pareo is the 16-year-old daughter of Calvin and Darcie Pareo. The junior-to-be at Dora High School is a member of the Dora FFA, BPA, and the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club. She enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, and enjoying competing in cutting and rodeos.

She represented Gustine, Texas as Junior Miss Rodeo for two years. She plans to become a veterinarian and specialize in horses.

She would like to have the honor of representing Roosevelt County as their queen. She believes that it would be a good opportunity to meet new people and spread the word about what a great county we live in.

Levacy

Johanna Levacy is 13 years old. The eighth-grader-to-be at Portales Junior High is a member of 4-H and Little Wranglers Junior Rodeo Association. She enjoys rodeo, swimming and riding.

She plans to become a veterinarian and a horse trainer. She would like to be fair princess to make a difference in Roosevelt County and to help the community.

Burress

Corie Burress is the 11-year-old daughter of David and Becky Burress. The sixth grader-to-be at Dora is a member of the Girl Scouts, 4-H and the Little Wranglers Junior Rodeo Association. She enjoys rodeo, basketball, volleyball and track.

She is the historian reporter for 4-H. She would like to go to school to become a veterinarian and own her own business in Dora.

She would like to be princess so that she can learn public speaking and represent Roosevelt County.

Hight

Kayla Hight is the 12-year-old daughter of Chris and Katie Hammack. The seventh grader-to-be at Portales Junior High is a member of the Arch 4-H club. She enjoys riding, photography and helping her father with his horses.

She would like to become a veterinarian and to help her father train horses.

She would like to be fair princess to show that you can achieve anything if you try. She also wants to learn to be a positive influence for younger girls.

Hammack

Tayler Hammack is the 10-year-old daughter of Chris and Katie Hammack. The fifth grader-to-be at Valencia Elementary is a member of the Arch 4-H Club. She enjoys cooking and riding horses.

She would like to become a professional cook. She would like to be fair princess to show girls that anyone can do it, even a tom boy like her.

Evans

Jessie Evans is the 11-year-old daughter of Joset and Lewis Evans. The sixth grader to- be at Lindsey Middle School is a member of Little Wranglers Junior Rodeo Association. She enjoys camping and swimming.

She would like to possibly become a veterinarian. She would like to become Roosevelt County Fair Princess because someday she wants to be Roosevelt County Fair Queen.

Cone

Mikaela Cone is the 7-year-old daughter of Mike and Karen Cone. The second grader-to-be is a member of the Roosevelt County 4-H - Arch Club and the Little Wranglers Rodeo Association. She enjoys gymnastics, Little Dribblers basketball, swimming, camping, playing with dogs, having fun with friends and riding horses.

She would like to be a school teacher and a coach to teach kids to ride horses.

She would like be fair sweetheart to learn to ride better and she loves the fair and thinks it would be fun.

Carter

Chesney Carter is the 7-year-old daughter of Alan and Shawn Carter. The second grader- to-be enjoys playing the fiddle and guitar and likes riding horses.

She wants to be a teacher and horse rider when she grows up. She wants to be fair sweetheart because she likes to ride her horse.

Reigning royalty

The reigning queen is Deseree Markham of Portales,. She is the daughter of Cynthia Markham and Robert Fraze and is a 2005 graduate of Portales High School.

The reigning princess is Autumn Cathey of Dora. She is the 12-year-old daughter of Bill and Joeli Cathey. She will be a seventh-grader this fall at Elida Junior High, and she was crowned Miss Junior Rodeo New Mexico at Clovis’ Pioneer days.

The reigning sweetheart is Arianne Cox of Pep. Cox, the 8-year-old daughter of Tom and Robin Cox, will be going into the third grade at Dora Elementary.
