William P. Cantrell, 84, of Panama City, Fla., died Tuesday, June 14, 2005.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1921, in Choteau, Okla.

He was a member of St. Andrew Baptist Church. He joined the social sciences faculty at Gulf Coast Community College in 1964. He was previously employed as a secondary school supervisor and curriculum coordinator at Jinks Junior High School.

A native of Oklahoma, he held degrees from Eastern New Mexico and Auburn Universities. He began teaching in 1947. He taught English and speech at public schools in New Mexico, Texas, and Georgia. He served with distinction in the U. S. Army, retiring with the rank of captain, family members said. He saw action in World War II and Korea, and was decorated by the governments of the United States, France, Belgium, and Holland.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert O. Cantrell.

Survivors include his wife, Mary O. Cantrell of Panama City; a daughter, Margaret “Cissy” Jolly of Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, Brigitte Tyree (and husband, John) of Austin; and two great-grandchildren, Abigail Tyree and William Tyree.

The Rev. Fred Sale officiated the services.

Burial was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Panama City, Fla.
