A controlled burn got out of hand Friday evening, sending towers of gray smoke into the Clovis sky.

The Clovis Fire Department responded to a call by a resident who intentionally started the fire on 522 County Road I to burn some wheat stubble on his land. The owner notified the fire department when the fire grew beyond his control and began to encroach upon nearby homes.

Entrance to the northeast corner of the property had to be made by cutting a fence, said Chief Ike Burns. However, the fire did not cause any property damage or injuries.
