Wildcats sweep Hereford

HEREFORD, Texas — The Clovis Wildcats continued their winning ways, sweeping Hereford 9-7 and 16-5 in summer league play.

Incoming sophomore Jerry Romero went a combined 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs while incoming senior Daniel Casarez was 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs.

“We didn’t play real well, but we got the job done today,” Clovis coach Shane Leatherwood said of his team, which improved to 14-5.

Clovis built an 8-0 lead in the opener before Hereford stormed back for seven runs in the third inning.

“Hitting’s kind of a contagious thing and they kind of caught fire,” Leatherwood said. “We just couldn’t stop the bleeding there for a while.”

However, Clovis held on to win.

In the second game, Clovis once again jumped on Hereford by scoring nine runs in the opening inning, but in this game Hereford couldn’t get closer than four runs.

The Wildcats slammed the door shut in the top of the fifth with seven more runs.

Leatherwood said he’s seen the improvement in the younger players and the Wildcats are benefiting from being more aggressive at the plate when they’re ahead in the count.

“We haven’t been fielding real well, but we’re hitting better than we used to,” he said.
