Clarence Barnett

Clarence “Barney” Barnett, 82, of Albuquerque, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, in Amarillo.

He was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Duran, to Homer and Elbertine Smith Barnett.

He grew up in Portales and graduated from Portales High School in 1941. He attended Eastern New Mexico Junior College for two years before volunteering for service in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served as a Navy pilot during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He married Betty Gossard on Nov. 4, 1945. He worked as a letter carrier for the Postal Service in Portales until 1956 when he moved to Albuquerque. In Albuquerque he worked as an air traffic controller until 1965. He married May Fair Meacham on Oct. 9, 1995.

He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Portales and the Retired Federal Employees.

Family members said he enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; a brother, Raymond Barnett; a son, Brett Barnett; and a granddaughter, Chrissy Smith.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry Barnett (and wife, Lyn) of Grand Junction, Colo., and Tommy Barnett (Cindy) of Mansfield, Texas; a daughter, Mona Robinson (Arlie) of Portales; six grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Thomas Marvin Barnett of Olathe, Kan.; a sister, Melveta Green of Portales; and two step-children, Pam Meacham and Joe Burton Meacham, both of Albuquerque.

Kenneth Broad will officiate the services.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Golden Acres Hospitality Room, 718 Wylie Cox Circle in Portales.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque.
