Ortega/Eagle

Lourdes Sena of Albuquerque announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter, Bernice Ortega, to Greg Eagle, son of Glen and Melba Eagle, all of Clovis.

The couple will exchange vows August 13, 2005, at Faith Christian Family Church. The reception will be at The Landing, Cannon Air Force Base.

The bride-elect is a 1995 graduate of Broad Horizons in Portales. She is employed at the Clovis New Journal and is the daughter of and the late Endelico Sena.

The prospective groom is a 1994 graduate of Clovis High School and is employed at Associated Supply Company.

Hobbs/Andrade

Derald and Vickie Hobbs of Portales announce the engagement of their daughter Julie Hobbs of Portales to AJay Andrade, of Camp Pendleton, California, son of Andy and Janet Andrade of Portales.

The couple will exchange vows July 23, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Portales.

The bride-elect is a 2003 graduate of Portales High School and is currently working on a bachelors in public relations at ENMU. She is employed at Sunland Peanuts.

The prospective groom is a 2003 graduate of Portales High School. He is a member of the United States Marine Corp and is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.

East Valley View

Homemakers

The East Valley View Homemakers club meeting was held Wednesday at Golden Acres. Hostesses were Lorene McAlister and Jessie Okuseinde.

“Hunger for Spring” was read by Lorene McAlister. Discussions were held regarding crafts we may create in the future. A “Kitchen Angel” was selected for our next craft project. Members told of books recently read and recommended to others to read and enjoy.

A luncheon of southwest chicken casserole and accompanying vegetables, salads and deserts was served to the following: Edna Morrison, Roberta Payne, Joy Ruth Bradley, Rose Johns, Mildred Morgan, Marie Cates, Fen Clark, Janie Bartel, Okusenida, McAlister, Letha Clark, Lois Sparks, Lou Wayne Rogers. Guests were Donna Skinner and Lois Tivis.

Our next meeting will be May 25 at 9:30 a.m. Visitors are always welcome.

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Wednesday at the club building with 35 members and six guests present. Following the breakfast, President Noelle Bartl called the meeting to order. Carol Hardin led the pledges and club collect, and Jan Smartnick gave the invocation.

Gaynelle Thomas, chair of the hostess committee, introduced others serving with her: Patrice Tompkins, Esther Bargas, Latrelle Massey, Cozetta Moore and Sheryl Borden.

The minutes from the March meeting were approved, and the treasurer’s report was filed for audit. The corresponding secretary announced that cards had been sent to Borden, Melissa Martin and Lois Crozier since the last meeting. She also announced that Evelyn Ledbetter had had knee surgery and Donna Hilliard’s mother had died recently.

June Ferguson asked members to sign up to help answer the telephones for the KENW-TV Tele-Auction on June 6.

Jane Hilliard, scholarship chairman, introduced Tatum Thron, a senior at Portales High School and her mother Barbie Thron. Tatum received the Portales Woman’s Club $200 scholarship.

Also introduced was Sasha Parker, a junior at Portales High School, who will be attending the HOBY seminar in June. This leadership program is funded through club scholarships, of which Portales has participated since its inception.

Linda Hamrick, Corresponding Secretary, presented perfect attendance certificates to the following members: Bartl, Iris Johnson, Frankye King, Della Kobernick, Jennifer Saiz, Gaynelle Thomas and Hamrick. A drawing for a gift certificate from Cattle Baron was won by Borden. Hamrick also presented a crystal tray to Bartl as a gift from the club for her service as club president for the past year.

A discussion ensued regarding expenses for the maintenance of the club building, which is on the state’s historic registry. The ideas and suggestions will be considered by the board during the summer.

Bartl, June Ferguson and Betsy Chavez represented the club at the GFWC-New Mexico State Convention held in Farmington. The club received certificates in the areas of Membership, Leadership and Home Life.

Humorous certificates were presented to Borden and Chavez for their fine arts entries, which had been lost in the mail and were not received in time for judging.

Bartl thanked the club for allowing her to serve as President, and thanked those who had served with her. Individual gifts and cards were presented to the other officers and all of the committee chairs.

Following the business meeting, Dianne Parker installed the 2005-2006 officers, following a garden theme.

The new officers who were installed include: Bartl, Immediate Past President; June Ferguson, President; Wanda Pettus, First Vice President; King, Second Vice President; Kobernick, Third Vice President; Kathy Knoll, Treasurer, Carol Fletcher, Recording Secretary and Saiz, Corresponding Secretary.

Each officer was presented an herb in recognition of the significance of her office.

In accepting the Presidency, June Ferguson dedicated her year to long-time club member Hilliard and one of the newer club members, Saiz. Both women received yellow rose carnations.

The club will adjourn for the summer, and the next meeting will be on Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the club building. Guests are always welcome.

Anniversary

Corbin

Wayne and Darlene Corbin of Portales will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 22, 2005 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank. The celebration will be hosted by their children.

The couple was married onMay 28, 1955 in Arch.

They have two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is a retired farmer and she is a housewife.

Davidson

Dustin and Julee Davidson of Lubbock, are the parents of a 6 lb. 14 oz. boy born on May 4, 2005, at Covenant Healthcare in Lubbock.

Marty Wayne Davidson has one brother, Tyler Channing.

His grandparents are Jackie Davidson of Hereford; Jimmy and Joyce Davis of Lubbock; and Mike and Carol Davidson of Portales.

His great-grandparents are James and Betty Hodge of Hereford; Marty and Wanda Martinez of Portales; and the late, J.C. Tucker.

His great-great-grandmother is Gladys Heflin of Hereford.
