LAINVIEW, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University used small-ball to build a 5-0 lead and the Greyhounds went on to beat Wayland Baptist 6-3 Tuesday night in a non-conference baseball matchup.
The Hounds (19-20) parlayed 11 singles, a double and five stolen bases into their six runs while four pitchers managed to hold the NAIA Pioneers (26-19) in check.
Bryan Moore, winning pitcher-designated hitter Brett Scherer, Derrick Kennedy, Mark Wallace and Justin Gee all had two hits for ENMU. Scherer (3-4) pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, allowing five hits and only two unearned runs.
Walks to Wallace and Ryan French set the table for a three-run second against WBU’s Gary Gates (1-1). Gee’s single to center plated Wallace with the first run.
French and Gee then worked a double steal before Gilbert Alvarado’s groundout scored French. Gee came home on Gates’ wild pitch.
In the fifth, Moore beat out an infield hit and took second on a single by Josh Kuchta. Both runners moved up on a fly ball to right, and Moore scored on a wild relay throw.
Scherer followed with a sacrifice fly to right.
A walk and two errors put WBU on the board in the sixth, and a second run scored on a fielder’s choice. ENMU got that run back in the seventh when Scherer and Kennedy opened the inning with singles and Scherer scored on Wallace’s double-play grounder.
The Pioneers’ final run came in the bottom of the seventh on Kelly Crain’s bases-loaded walk to Chasen DeLeon. Crain got out of the inning by retiring Jacob Palomarez on a grounder to second.
David Swinconos worked out of a two-on, none-out jam in the eighth, and Kellen Smith gave up a two-out single in the ninth before notching his first collegiate save.
