Area players chosen for NMHSCA games

ALBUQUERQUE — Four Portales High seniors and one from Dora have been chosen to play for South squads in New Mexico High School Coaches Association all-star basketball games this summer.

Chris Carter, Bo Gabriel and Chris Kirchner were chosen to represent PHS in the fifth annual Class 3A boys all-star game, scheduled for July 15 at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas.

Meantime, Patty Terry was chosen for the girls contest. Coaches for the 3A game have not yet been chosen.

In Class 1A-2A, Dora’s D’Shawn Pettigrew was chosen for the girls game, slated for June 11 in Gallup. Coaches for that game have not yet been selected.

Meantime, Floyd’s Jeff Gillespie will coach the South squad in the boys 1A-2A game, set for July 28 at The Pit in Albuquerque.

The 4-5A girls will play in Gallup on June 11, while the 4-5A boys play July 28 at The Pit.

North teams won both 4-5A games and both 1-2A contests last year.

The South leads the 4-5A boys series 32-26 while the North has a 20-6 advantage in the 1A-2A division.

In girls competition, the North has a 19-5 margin in the 4A-5A division and a 13-6 edge at the 1A-2A level.

The South swept the 3A games last year, the girls winning 75-68 to even the series at 1-1 and the boys posting a 97-88 victory to take a 3-1 lead.
