Report indicates mattress fire set intentionally

A Clovis Fire Department report indicates a mattress fire Friday at the Curry County Adult Detention Center was set intentionally.

Jail officials reported one inmate in the booking area cell at the time of the fire. The inmates in area were moved to another compartment of the building, said jail administrator Don Burdine.

Several jail personnel were checked on the scene for smoke inhalation, but none were transported to the hospital, the report showed.

The fire department was dispatched at 4 p.m. to the county jail on a building fire call. The first engine arrived on scene and fire personnel observed a small amount of smoke showing from one side of the building, according to a fire report from the department.

Fire personnel removed a smoldering mattress from a jail cell to a parking lot, where it was extinguished.

The fire department also ventilated the building of smoke.

Fire chief Ray Westerman said the investigation was ongoing. The fire report showed that the fire had been set intentionally with a match in one of the cells.
