CLUB NOTES:

Altrusa International, Inc.

Members of Altrusa International, Inc. of Clovis met at Muffley's Back Door for their regular business meeting March 22. The minutes were read and committee reports given. The slate of officers were read and a motion was made that the slate be approved by acclamation.

The officers for next year will be president, Kathy Travis; vice president, Phyllis Davidson; treasurer, Glenda Hileman; recording secretary; Caroly Sherman, corresponding secretary, Jennifer Gomez, two year director, Joanne Winslow, and one year directors, Marty Thorsen and Marjorie Watking.

The club will have a booth at the women's conference at Clovis Community College on April 1, to promote Altrusa as well as sell angel pins and cookbooks. The club has completed paperwork to apply for two awards at district conference. Those are the Mamie L. Bass service award and the Letha H. Brown literacy award.

District conference will be in Montrose, Colo., on April 29 and 30. All officers were encouraged to attend.

International convention will be held in Puerto Rico on July 15 to 18. The club will sell angel pins at both meetings. Hostesses for April will be Marjorie Watkins, Sylvia Bean and Beverly Fitz.

Curry County Federated Republican Women

Curry County Federated Republican Women (CCFRW) president, Carolyn Shipley presided over the March 8 meeting at Fuzhou Buffet in Clovis. Twenty-four members and guests were welcomed. The February minutes and treasurer’s report were reviewed and approved as presented.

Shipley updated the group on legislation issues. Linda Teakell and Dorothy Nelson spoke on the pending Clean Indoor Act. Associate member Rube Render announced the Republican Office at 111 E. Sixth Street, Ste. 1 in Clovis is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The office telephone number is 763-0658; e-mail address is [email protected]. Render said Alexis Valdez has been appointed the new area field director.

The Curry County Republican Biennial Organizational Convention is scheduled for 9 a.m. on April 9 at the 180 Building, 3401 N. Norris. Contact Render at 763-0658 for information.

Shipley announced a New Mexico Federated Republican Women (NMFRW) scholarship will be given to one deserving individual planning a career in political science or public service. Details are available at local high school counselors’ offices.

In addition, Shipley told members the Curry County group received a Silver Service Award from NMFRW. CCFRW will again participate in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life scheduled for May 6 and 7 at Ned Houk Park. Shipley volunteered to captain the team and is joined by Shirley Swann, Judy Myrick, Jamie Fish and Mr. James Fish. Rube Render and Helen

Cleveland introduced guest speaker Ladona Clayton, the assistant superintendent of Instruction for the Clovis School System. Clayton discussed the many aspects and challenges of the No Child Left Behind Act for area schools. Marge Render offered to make members a flag name tag button. Delta Kappa Gamma

Delta Kappa Gamma, Zeta Chapter of Clovis, recently hosted the members of Phi Chapter of Portales for the annual spring banquet held at K-Bob’s Restaurant of Clovis. The Zeta chapter officers, including president, Cheryl Hinrichs, assisted by Dianne Davis, Patsy Camp, and Jeannie Eichenberger, served as the hostess committee.

Using a “cowboy” theme, the officers provided table decorations consisting of original art work by George Davis, sunflower and barbed wire floral arrangements, jewel-tone bandana napkins in coiled rope rings, and a take home favor of a small woven basket containing a red votive candle, enhanced with a small sunflower and tied with a red bandana ribbon.

The Border Town Band from Farwell, Texas, provided the musical entertainment. Dr. Les Morrow, a local veterinarian and noted Cowboy Poet, was the featured speaker for the evening. Following the dinner, the members enjoyed visiting and sharing chapter news.

The next regular meeting for Zeta Chapter is April 25. Among upcoming events is the annual Delta Kappa Gamma, Theta State convention, to be held in Portales on April 29, 30, and May 1.

Pintores Art League seeks works for show

The Pintores Art League is looking for art works from students to participate in the Second Annual Spring Student Fine Arts Show in May. Entries will be accepted from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 4 at the Main ARTeri Gallery, 311 N. Main Street in Clovis. Works must be dry, matted if on paper, wired and ready to hang or show. Mike and Sandra Gray of Clovis announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Kristal Gray of Dalhart, Texas to Garrett Johnson, of Dalhart, son of Gary and Terri Johnson of Dalhart. The couple will exchange vows 7 p.m., June 18, 2005 at Central United Methodist Church, Dalhart. The reception will be at Dalhart Country Club. The bride-elect is a 1999 graduate of Eastern New Mexico University. She is employed at Region 16 Early Childhood Intervention Program, Amarillo, Texas.

Kniskern/McMath

Linda Dornak of Clovis and Steve Dornak of Louise, Texas announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Nicole Kniskern of Clovis to Ryan McMath, of Clovis, son of Pat and Nancy Bishop of Clovis and Archie and Ann McMath of Portales. The couple will exchange vows at 6:30 p.m., April 16, 2005 at Faith Christian Family Church.

The reception will be at The Landing, Cannon AFB.

The bride-elect is a 2002 graduate of Clovis High School. She is employed at Clovis Dermatology and Cotton Patch.

The prospective groom is a 2001 graduate of Clovis High School. He is employed at Desert Star Dairy. Invitations have been sent.

Pyle/Goldbaum

Linda and Tom Rickstrew of San Antonio announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Ashley Catara Pyle of Clovis, to Benjamin William Goldbaum, of Clovis, son of Diane and Dan True of Clovis.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Lonzo Lassiter

Lonzo Lassiter is a 54 year old non-traditional student who returned to college at the age of 50. He is now a student at Eastern New Mexico University, majoring in communications, with an emphasis in broadcast production. Lassiter became interesting in the arts while attending Clovis Community College and changed his minor to fine arts. He has lived in Clovis since 1967 and has been a member of Pintores Art League for the past three years. His main interests include pottery, photography and sculpture.

Williamson

Mary Alice Bojorquez and Chris Williamson of Clovis are the parents of a 6 pound boy, Charles Michael Williamson, born on Sept. 4, 2004 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. Grandparents are Charles and Maria Bojorquez of Clovis, Darlene Jenkins of Clovis and Dewayne Williamson of Fairfield, Texas. Great-grandparents are Charles and Shirley Lassitter of Clovis and Juan Amaro of Clovis.

Barron

Josue and Marivel Barron of Clovis are the parents of a 7 pound 11 ounce girl born on March 22, 2005 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. Arit D’vanna Barron has two sisters, Ivana Aylin and Jovanna Anahi. Grandparents are Doroteo and Maria Barron, Antonio J. and Martha Soto all of Muleshoe, Texas.

Local artisan places in woodcarvers show

Artisan Clyde Davis of Clovis placed third in this year’s Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers show in the “gunning shorebirds” category with his depiction of a red knot — a species of sandpiper.

The “gunning shorebirds” category is where the carver must do most of his or her detail work on the carving with a knife and paint, not being allowed to use woodburning or Dremel tools. The point is to depict the traditional work of the old time decoy carvers, to one’s highest ability.

“Shorebirds are probably my overall favorite subject to carve” said Davis, who has been woodcarving since 1987. “They combine a natural gracefulness with a sense of humor and personality.”

Ohio Decoy Collectors and Carvers show, held in the heartland of the Great Lakes Flyway, has attracted skilled wildlife carvers from around the U.S. and Canada for more than 25 years.

Local geography bee state qualifiers announced

Several students in the Clovis area were selected to attend the state-level georaphic bees sponsored by National Geographic on Friday to vy for a spot in the national competition in May in Washington, D.C.

Those students were: Felicia Aguilar, sixth grade, Sandia Elementary; Jessica L. Carter, sixth grade, Highland Elementary; Bryan Wygant, sixth grade, Zia Elementary; Colton L. Brewer, eighth grade, Gattis Junior High School; Bryce Harrison, eighth grade, Faith Triumphant Christian School.

Local on Fordham’s dean’s list

Tristan L. Carpenter was named on the dean’s list for distinguished academic achievement in the fall semester of 2004 from Fordham University College of Business in New York.
