Freshman Whitney Miller went undefeated on the weekend, and the Portales girls tennis team improved their record to 8-1 while winning the Coyote Classic Tennis Tournament, held Friday and Saturday in Roswell.
Miller, playing No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles with Kassandra Short, won all three matches in both divisions as Portales scored victories against Goddard, Roswell and El Paso (Texas) Irvin.
Teams received one point each for wins in either singles or doubles flights, and Portales scored 20 points total (8-1 over Irvin, 7-2 over Roswell and 5-4 over Goddard) for first place. They were followed by Roswell, Goddard and Irvin.
Also playing for the girls were Rachelle Self (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles), Morgan Erf (No. 2 singles, No. 2 doubles), Jessica Bulls (No. 3 singles, No. 2 doubles) and Kaycee Quick (No. 4 singles, No. 1 doubles).
On the boys side, the Rams finished second behind Goddard. The boys, 5-4 on the season, scored easy victories over Roswell (9-0) and Irvin (8-1), but were beaten by Goddard 8-1.
Nathan Acker, playing in No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles with brother Chase, scored six wins on the weekend. Other players for Portales were Logan Brown (No. 1 singles, No. 2 doubles), Matt Tucker (No. 4 singles, No. 2 doubles) Walker Partin (No. 5 singles) and Justin McCasland (No. 6 singles, No. 3 doubles with Partin).
