Mr. Kenneth A. Shaw, 55, of Portales, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in Orlando, Fla.
He was born on Jan. 28, 1949, in Raton, to Lorene and James A. Shaw. He graduated from Roy High School in 1965. He then came to Portales to attend the university and graduated with a degree in education in 1969. He earned his master’s degree in the mid-1970s. His first teaching job was on an Indian reservation where he remained two years. In 1972 he moved to Texico where he taught and later became a school principal. In 1992 he became high school principal and athletic director for the Dora Schools. In 1995 he moved to Roy to become the superintendent of schools. He retired in 2001 after 31 years in education. Soon after retiring he went to work for Cutler Repaving, where he was superintendent of traffic control. He had been working on a job in Florida just a week at the time of his death. On Aug. 11, 1973, in Albuquerque he married Maxine Lujan. His hobbies included fishing and hunting. Family members said he especially liked fly fishing in Cimarron Canyon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Kenneth Shaw of Portales; two daughters, Natasha Shaw of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Amber Shaw of Portales; a grandchild, Dawson Shaw; a brother, Gary Shaw of Edgewood; and a sister, Regina Lee of San Diego.
A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
Father Tobin Hitt will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Roy Cemetery.
Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Roy Gymnasium.
Pallbearers are Scott Parker, Pat Romero, John Mahoney, Kevin Zamora, Roger Tompkins and Greg Martin.
