Capt. Floyd P. Miles, 85, of Roswell, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1919, in Endee, to former Governor John and Susie Wade Miles. On Oct. 14, 1997, he married Meredith Campbell in Carrizozo. He joined the New Mexico State Police on Dec. 15, 1941, and his first duty station was port of entry detail. In 1942, he was assigned to the motorcycle division and later transferred to Santa Rosa. In 1995, he made sergeant. He worked in Fort Sumner, later in Alamogordo, and then in Farmington. In July 1959, he made captain and transferred to Socorro, Gallup, Clovis and then Roswell. He served 40 years on the force and retired in Roswell in 1981. He had been the oldest living State Police Officer in New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Darlene Mitchel Miles; and three sisters, Edna Green, Mildred Adams, and Peggy Henrie.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ronnie Miles (and wife, Pat) of Roswell; a daughter, Jana Miles of Portland, Ore.; his former wife, Janice Lumsden of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Preston and Kelsey Miles, both of Roswell, and Michael Miles of Portland, Ore.; three brothers, Wade Miles (Sara) of Tucumcari, Lloyd Miles (Betty) of Belen, and Franklin Miles (Pat) of Santa Fe; five stepchildren, Bob Brunner of Jacksonville, Fla., Gary Corman, Cyndi Mitchell and Jeannie Corman, all of Roswell, and Dale Corman of Ruidoso; and step-grandchildren, Megaan, Lacy, John, Sam, Steve, Chris, Laine and Will.
Retired Pastor Monroe Miles, Pastor Curtis Harding and Pastor Randy Reeves will officiate the services.
Burial will be at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
Pallbearers are the State Police Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at LaGrone Funeral Chapel in Roswell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico State Police Brotherhood Association in Roswell.
