A Clovis man on Dec. 21 was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges he and two other suspects burglarized a Clovis home three times and hit a victim in the head with a hammer, a press release from the district attorney’s office shows.

James Moten, 43, of Clovis, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary; conspiracy to aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon; aggravated battery; larceny; criminal damage; receiving stolen property; resisting arrest; and residential burglary, the release said.

The crimes occurred on April 15, 2003, when Moten, along with another male and female, broke into a home at 817 West Street in Clovis three separate times in the same day. Later that day, when the suspect’s vehicle was located, Moten ran from the Clovis police but was apprehended and arrested after a foot pursuit, the release said.

Three new prosecutors have been hired at the Clovis district attorney’s office in the past month, meaning the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is now fully staffed, according to a press release from District Attorney Matthew Chandler. The new attorneys and their credentials, according to the release, are:

• Drew Tatum, a Clovis native and former captain and judge advocate general in the U.S. Air Force, has been practicing criminal law for the Air Force since 2001. Tatum began working at the district attorney’s office on Nov. 22 as a deputy district attorney.

• Chris Chandler, formerly of Tulsa, Okla., and no relation to the district attorney, has experience in criminal appellate work and complex civil rights claims. He began working on Dec. 13 in Clovis as a senior trial attorney.

• Laura White, a New Mexico native, has been a licensed attorney since 1988, and is transferring from the Roswell district attorney’s office. White began working in the 9th Judicial District on Tuesday as an assistant trial attorney, focusing primarily on juvenile crimes, domestic violence and DWIs.
