No information available on Cannon death

Cannon Air Force Base officials are still not releasing information surrounding the death of an Air Force dependent nearly two weeks ago.

Capt. Andre Kok of Cannon Public Affairs said no information can be made available to the public until after the investigation into Kimberly Susan Novak’s death is complete.

Novak, 20, died Oct. 29 at her home on base.

Tim Stepetic, associate director of the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, said Tuesday his agency has not received a death certificate.

“We’re working with the Office of Special Investigations at Cannon,” Stepetic said. “I’m hoping we can see a death certificate within a week. The death certificate is purely cause and manner (of death).”

Novak joined the Air Force in June of 2002 and was honorably discharged in August of this year, according to information provided by Muffley Funeral Home. Her husband, Edward Novak II, is on active duty at Cannon, the information from the funeral home said.

Officials said it is not uncommon for a formal investigation to take place after an Air Force dependent dies.

Local law enforcement officials said they are not involved in the investigation and do not have jurisdiction.
