Senior outside hitter Nicole Stoffel collected 24 kills and helped rally Angelo State past Eastern New Mexico University 24-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-22, 15-9 in a Lone Star Conference South Division volleyball match at Greyhound Arena.
The Rambelles (18-7, 5-2 South) moved past the Zias into sole possession of second place in the division, one game behind Abilene Christian (21-7, 6-1), which won at West Texas A&M 30-28, 30-26, 37-35 on Saturday. The Zias (19-7, 4-3) lost for the first time in eight home matches this season.
Senior outside hitter Anna Bellum had 16 kills for the Zias, while sophomore middle blocker Grace George added 14. Eastern had only nine attack errors in the first two games combined, but committed 11 each in the third and fourth games.
“We relaxed and let them get the momentum,” ENMU coach Mike Maguire said. “Volleyball is a sport where if you let a team get momentum, it can be the kiss of death.
“We had our opportunities. We just made too many mistakes.”

Cross country — Junior Patrick McGuire finished 11th to lead the ENMU men to a fifth-place team finish in Saturday’s LSC cross country championships at Durant, Okla., hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma.
McGuire missed out by one spot of earning All-LSC honors. He ran a time of 26 minutes, 18.01 seconds over eight kilometers.
“Patrick was trying to catch the 10th guy, but he just ran out of gas,” ENMU coach Joel McMullen said. “Our guys ran their guts out, especially Patrick, Ricardo (Hernandez, 14th in 26:27.94) and Jason (Garcia, 18th in 26:48.97).
“All these guys ran as well as they have all year.”
The Greyhounds finished with 101 team points, eight behind fourth-place Texas A&M-Kingsville. Abilene Christian posted a perfect score of 15, taking each of the top five places, to easily win the championship.
The ENMU women finished ninth out of 11 teams with 225 points. ACU also won that division easily with 36 team points to 82 for runnerup Central Oklahoma.
Senior Karissa Huskey posted the Zias’ top finish, coming in 33rd in 26:18.01 for six kilometers. Junior Lynnae Chavez was 40th in 26:42.43.
Huskey was fifth individually and the Zias were fifth as a team in last year’s event, which Eastern hosted at Portales Country Club. But McMullen said the competition was much tougher this time.
“I thought we might place a little higher than we did,” McMullen said of the team race. “I guess we just didn’t get up in the pack like we should have at the start.”

Men’s soccer — Missouri Southern got the game-winner on an Eastern New Mexico University own-goal just over two minutes into the second overtime on Saturday, giving the Lions a 2-1 win over the Greyhounds in a Southwest Soccer Conference match at the ENMU soccer field.
The Hounds (5-11-1, 2-9-0 SSC) lost both of their weekend matches at home, falling on Friday to Northeastern State 3-0.
Eastern scored just over five minutes into the second half on Saturday on a goal by Pedro Gallardo, assisted by Martin Gallegos. Southern (2-13-2, 1-9-1) tied it with about 20 minutes left on a penalty kick by J.P. West after Eastern was called for a foul inside the penalty box.
On Friday, Northeastern State got a hat trick from senior forward Sergio Salinas — including two on penalty kicks — in registering a 3-0 win over the Hounds.
Salinas now has 21 goals for the season, helping the Redmen (15-2, 9-2 LSC) stay in the conference race with Incarnate Word. NSU won the earlier matchup over Eastern 1-0 at Tahlequah, Okla.
“We were in this game until the referees starting to call PKs in the box,” ENMU assistant coach CarlosElizondo said. “But our boys played with a lot of heart until the end. We created some decent opportunities toward the end of the game, but we just couldn’t finish them.”
