Pennies add up for charity

Pennies do add up. Students in Clovis schools can verify that, having raised $7,253.76 in their first United Way Penny Drive.

Every school in the Clovis district participated in the project, with Mesa Elementary leading the way by collecting $1,210, according to a news release from Curry County United Way.

Sandia Elementary ($1,070.50) also raised more than $1,000.

The school district’s enrollment is just shy of 8,400 students, which means they raised an average of 86 cents apiece for charity.

Faculty and staff at Clovis’ schools pledged just over $50,000 to United Way earlier this year.

Curry County United Way provides funds for 13 non-profit agencies, accordng to its Web site.
