ENMU soccer teams sweep Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Sophomore forward Johnathan Holman collected two goals and an assist Friday as Eastern New Mexico stayed unbeaten in its first season of competition with a 4-1 victory over Colorado Christian.

Keith Vargas scored unassisted in the fourth minute to put the Greyhounds (2-0-1) in front, and Holman then assisted on a goal by Donnell Jackson for a 2-0 advantage.

Holman added a pair of goals before the Cougars (0-1) got on the board on a goal from Chris Royer.

ENMU’s women (2-1) also posted a 4-1 win on Friday over their CCU counterparts as sophomore forward Megan Dozier posted a hat trick.

Sophomore Anna Funk’s goal, on an assist from Nicole Johnson, put the Zias in front for good 2-1 in the final minute of the half. Dozier, who broke a scoreless tie in the 27th minute with an unassisted tally, added her final two goals in the second half, the latter on an assist from Funk.

ENMU goalkeeper Amanda Vanlandingham was credited with seven saves in the match, allowing CCU’s only goal to Rachel Foose with about 12 minutes to go in the half.

The Hounds and Zias complete their trip to Colorado with matches against CSU-Pueblo today.

Cross country — Injuries and illness plagued the ENMU cross country teams in Friday’s season-opening Buffalo Stampede at Canyon, Texas, hosted by West Texas A&M.

The men’s team sent six runners, but neither junior Patrick McGuire (hip) nor Kenyan freshman Kennedy Baiywo (illness) was able to finish and thus the Greyhounds did not compile a team score, first-year coach Joel McMullen said.

The women’s team finished fifth out of seven full teams, but did not have the services of senior Karissa Huskey, who was nursing a knee injury.

Junior Orlando Sanchez led ENMU’s men, placing 11th out of 49 runners who finished in a time of 22 minutes, 59 seconds over the four-mile course. Ricardo Hernandez was 19th in 23:15, Jason Garcia 21st in 21:23 and Clint Bizzell, nursing an ankle injury which limited his practice time recently, 45th in 28:42.

“We had five guys running within about two seconds of each other at the mile mark,” McMullen said. “About at the two-mile mark is where Kennedy started to get ill. And Patrick had been having some hip problems anyway, and then he misstepped.

“I was proud of the guys that finished. I know they were disappointed they didn’t get a team result, but they ran as hard as they could.”

The women were led by junior Lynnae Chavez, 21st of 51 overall in 23:18 over five kilometers (3.1 miles). Other Zias finishes were Brittany Bauer, 23rd in 23:48; Lindsey Roberts, 28th in 24:18; Joyce Dean, 36tyh in 25:25; Leora Shorty, 39th in 25:58, and Lisa Lopez, 40th in 26:00.

Angelo State swept both team titles, finishing with 43 points on the men’s side to 51 for Wayland Baptist, 52 for New Mexico Highlands, 76 for the Meadow City Trck club, 131 for host WT, 145 for McMurry University and 188 for Oklahoma Panhandle State.

The ASU women put five runners in the top eight and finished with 29 points, followed by New Mexico Highlands 58, WT 106, New Mexico Junior College 108, ENMU 113, McMurry 116 and Panhandle State 158.

Volleyball — ENMU split four season-opening matches over the weekend in the Mesa State tournament at Grand Junction, Colo.

On Saturday, the Zias lost to Mesa State 27-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-27 and beat West Florida 30-28, 30-26, 30-26. On Friday, The Zias lost to Colorado School of Mines 30-20, 30-25, 31-29 before rallying from a two-game deficit to eke out a 19-30, 25-30, 33-31, 30-28, 15-12 triumph over Colorado State-Pueblo.

Senior outside hitter Anna Bellum had 20 kills and sophomore middle blocker Grace George added 15 against Mesa State. Senior Emiliue Rodman had 12 kills in the win over West Florida, followed by junior Lindsey Schiely with 11 and Bellum with 10.

Schiely had 13 kills and Bellum added 11 in the loss to Mines. George posted two block solos and four block assists, while senior libero Jessica Weeks had 18 digs.

In the win over Pueblo, six players had eight or more kills, led by Schiely with 11. Bellum had 29 digs and senior setter Margie Goble 26.

The Zias open a three-match homestand at 7 p.m. Monday against Midwestern State at Greyhound Arena.
