Gilbert R. Chavez, 80, of Lubbock, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1923, in Matador, Texas, to Santos and Maria Ramirez Chavez.

He moved to California where he worked as an independent contractor and for Hunsucker Construction. He retired and moved to Lubbock in 1984. He was involved with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Family members said he enjoyed traveling, walking, fishing, hunting and playing baseball. Baseball was his love, along with being a grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gregoria; and two sons, Luis and Frank Chavez.

Survivors include a daughter, Lala Chavez Salinas (and husband, Johnny) of Lubbock; two stepchildren, Ray Gonzalez and Laura Brito; special grandchildren, Sonia, Gilbert, Michelle, Huero, Yvonne (Michael), Michelle DeHart (Haas) and Georgia Ann Braliff (Eddie); 15 other grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CDT) today at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel in Lubbock.

Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.
