Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

8/15/04 Club Notes

Altrusa International Inc. of Clovis

Altrusa International Inc. of Clovis met for its regular program on Monday at Muffley's Back Door. Hostesses were Margie Reisiger, Beverly Fitz, and Sylvia Bean. They served dinner to the club at 6 p.m.

The program was presented by Ricky Burns, a junior at Texico High School. He shared his science project on "The effect of irradiated fruit on the fruit fly". This project earned Ricky a trip to Portland Oregon to the International Science Fair this year. The fruit flies were exposed to irradiated fruit for one generation and then each successive generation was observed for effects. The group was fascinated by the pictures showing continued mutation in through six generations. Burns' conclusion was that more study needs to be done on irradiated fruit and its effect.

After the program, Carolyn Muffley initiated JoAnne Winslow into the club in a lovely candlelight ceremony. Congratulations to JoAnne.

New club brochures were distributed to each member of the club to hand out to prospective members. The next program meeting will be a "bring a prospective member" evening.

There will be a board meeting on August 19, 2004, and the next club meeting will be the business meeting at noon on August 24, 2004 at Muffley's Back Door.

Pilot Club of Clovis

The Pilot Club of Clovis held their monthly business meeting at the Sundance Steak House. President Sue Rutter called the club to order and chaplain Sylva Compton gave the invocation.

After the meal, roll call and treasurer’s report, Rutter began the discussion on the “Quilt Raffle” at the county fair. Rida Winkles of Clovis made and donated a quilt to be raffled off with the funds going to Lifeline. The quilt will be on display at the fair beginning Aug. 19, 2004, and the Pilot Club will be selling tickets for six for $5 or one dollar a ticket. Pecans, mixed nuts and cashews will be sold beginning in November. Volunteers are needed for Meals-on-Wheels Aug. 30 until Sept. 5, 2004. The club picked it’s “Sweetheart of the Year”, lunch meeting at 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2004 at Muffley’s ‘Back Door’. The evening business meetings are being moved to the 2nd Monday of each month to a lunch meeting beginning in September at the Sundance Steak House.
