John T. “Gramps” Ortiz Sr., 57, of Clovis, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Methodist Transplant and Specialty Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1946, in Las Vegas, N.M., to Benito and Domicilia Gomez Ortiz.
He was in the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War. He married Rose Lucero on Aug. 2, 1969, in Muleshoe. He was a driver for United Parcel Services in the Clovis Center for 29 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, the Parish Council, VFW Post 315 and the American Legion Post 25. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years. Family members said he loved wood working and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Ortiz Jr. (and wife, Rosamond) and Frankie Ortiz (Don Mills), all of San Antonio; a daughter, Lupe Lozoya (J.J.) of Keller, Texas; a brother, William Ortiz of Lubbock; five grandchildren, Paloma and Sonja Ortiz, both of San Antonio and Jarin, Jenay and Johnta Lozoya, all of Keller, Texas; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Father Sotero Sena will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
Pallbearers are Berto Ortega, Ralph Wyatt, Lacho Gutierrez, Fidel Madrid, Larry Robinson, Marlin Brown and Danny Padilla.
Honorary pallbearers are the UPS drivers of the Clovis Center.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
