Test reveals Zias' coach has cancer

ALBUQUERQUE — A pathology report released on Thursday determined that a brain tumor which hospitalized Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball coach Dan Buzard over the weekend is cancerous.

ENMU athletic director Mike Maguire said Thursday night that an MRI was done on the 36-year-old Buzard earlier in the day, the results of which should be available sometime today. He said at that point, doctors will decide on what course of action to take.

“We’re just going to keep saying our prayers and see what happens,” Maguire said.

Buzard was taken to a hospital on Sunday while visiting his wife’s parents in Albuquerque, and surgery on Monday removed about half the tumor. Part of the tumor had entered the brain.

He had been experiencing migraine headaches since last fall, including occasional periods of vomiting over the past couple of months.

Buzard has coached women’s basketball at Eastern for 15 years, including the last two as head coach.
