Ubaldo Valdez, 86

Mr. Ubaldo J. Valdez, 86, of Lubbock, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born on May 4, 1918, El Vado, to Inecita and Amarante Valdez.

He made his home in Cebolla until 1955. He married Josephina Trujillo on Aug. 19, 1941, in Cebolla. During World War II he served aboard the USS General G.C. Martin, a transport ship in the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1955 he moved his family to Portales. For many years he worked as a finish carpenter for Bob Ross Construction. In later years he was employed by Frank Muse Construction. He had been retired since 1980. Family members said he enjoyed his garden and yard and often helped family members and friends with building projects. For the past three years he had made his home in Lubbock. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank Valdez and Aquilino Valdez; and a sister, Rose Martinez and by his wife.

Survivors include four sons, Leroy Valdez (and wife, Debbie Carpenter) of Roswell, Frank Valdez of Portales, Ernest Valdez of Lubbock and Eloy Valdez of Phoenix; two daughters, Judy Valdez of Portales and Kathy Rush (Rex) of Melrose; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inacita Lopez of Cebolla.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.

Father Sotero Sena will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Cedar and Mitchum Rush, Frank Jr., Eric, Jeff and Fitzgerald Valdez, Joey Anderson and Trevor Banister.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
