PORTALES — Nothing could stop Roosevelt County Tuesday night, except the weather.

The Portales-based squad pounded out five extra-base hits in a six-run first inning and built a 10-0 lead over Clovis Zia in the first round of the District 3 Major League All-Star tournament at Rotary Park. The contest was halted in the top of the third because of lightning and the threat of severe weather in the area.

After a wait of nearly an hour, a decision was made to suspend play. District 3 administrator Mike Harris said the game will resume at 7 p.m. today, while an 11-year-old first-round matchup set for that time between Roosevelt County and Clovis American has been switched from Rotary Park to Clovis’ Beachum Field.

In Tuesday’s other first-round tilt, Clovis American pounded Quay County 20-0 in Tucumcari.

“It’s disappointing,” Roosevelt County manager Sammy Villanueva said of the stoppage. “I hope we can keep the momentum going tomorrow. But these kids have worked hard for three weeks.

“We’ve been working real hard on the fundamentals. This is a good group of kids.”

Roosevelt got three doubles, a triple and Ty Terry’s two-run homer in the top of the first. Zia added to its woes by committing a pair of errors.

Iszac Valdez drove in one run with a double, and Jordan Hill doubled home a pair of runs and came all the way home on a wild relay. Lathan Lieb followed with the first of his two triples and rode home on Terry’s two-run homer to right-center.

Roosevelt added four runs in the second on two hits — Hill’s run-scoring single and Lieb’s RBI triple. Other runs came in on an error and Terry’s groundout.

Chet Chenault and Shaun Carrasco each pitched a hitless inning and combined for five strikeouts for Roosevelt County, which was batting with two out and no one on when play was halted in the third.
