Thelma D. Chambers, 87, of Portales, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Farwell Convalescent Center.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1916, in Willis, Okla., to Ruth K. and Luther D. Jackson.
She grew up in Leonard, Texas, and moved to Roosevelt County in 1926. She worked for the Clovis Schools Lunch Program until 1970, when she moved to Van Nuys, Calif. She then worked for Valley Presbyterian Hospital until 1979. She returned to Clovis in 1985 and worked for Clovis Home Health Care until 1988. She then moved to Golden Acres in Portales. Family members said she was an avid reader who enjoyed playing games, crafting and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and George Jackson; and a sister, Irene Bohannon.
Survivors include two sons, Charles V. Chambers (and wife, Evelyn) of Portales and James F. Chambers (Deann) of Weatherford, Texas; two daughters, Iva Collins (Dave) of Portales and Anita Wilmeth (Pat) of Clovis; two sisters, Verna Jackson of Sun Valley, Calif., and Betty Kincaid of Smyer, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Diane Myers of Portales.
Herbert Bergstrom will officiate the services.
Honorary pallbearers are all grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
