Amarillo High pulled out a 3-2, eight-inning win over Clovis in the first game of a West Texas League summer baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Bell Park.
The Dusters completed the sweep with a 21-4 victory in the nightcap, a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
David Root pitched six innings for Clovis (2-4) in the opener and left with the game tied 1-1. Both teams scored in the seventh, Clovis forcing extra innings when John Props singled, stole second and scored on a single by Sean Cruce.
Cade Wheeler pitched the final two innings for Clovis, which collected eight hits in the game. Daniel Casarez had a single and a double in four at-bats, Matt Ulibarri was 2-for-5 and Jordan Moore added a double.
In the second game, Amarillo scored in all five innings, capped by a 10-run fifth. Clovis put together five of its six hits in the fourth when it scored all of its runs.
Ulibarri went 2-for-2 in the game, including an RBI triple, while Props and Luke Gray each drove in a run with a single.
“Root threw real well,” Clovis coach Shane Shallenberger said of the opener. “We just didn’t get it done. We had bases loaded and one out once and second and third and one out another time and didn’t score.
“In the second game, we kicked it around a lot (four errors). We (pitched) some guys that haven’t been on the mound for a long time. We’re just trying to find out what we’ve got for next (spring).”
