CARLSBAD — Clovis High junior Travis Reid struggled on a couple of early holes Monday and could never quite recover, but his Wildcats teammates were able to pick him up.
Reid’s two bad holes left him with a round of 42-38 — 80 in the District 4-5A golf tournament at Carlsbad’s Lake Carlsbad Golf Course, but senior Perry Jackson played a solid even-par round at 35-37 — 72 for medalist honors and junior Blake Berry shot 44-40 — 84 at No. 5, just enough to allow the Cats to capture their fourth consecutive district championship.
Clovis finished at 312 in the five-team competition, holding off the host Cavemen (315) and Hobbs (319) for team honors.
“Perry played super, super solid,” Simmons said. “He’s always had the capability of shooting that type of round; he was focused today and did a fantastic job. And Blake’s round was crucial to winning the championship. He came through big-time for us.
“All three teams played pretty decent. It was a nailbiter there at the end.”
Also for the Cats, junior Guillermo Chavez shot 38-38 — 76 and junior Ryan Hahn finished at 43-44 — 87.
Simmons said Reid hit two balls out of bounds off the tee on No. 1 en route to a quadruple-bogey eight, then hit his second shot out of bounds on No. 5 in posting a triple-bogey seven. Other than that, he played one-over-par.
“He handled it real well,” Simmons said of Reid. “I was pretty impressed with that.”
Clovis’ girls finished a distant third in team competition with a four-person score of 424.
Carlsbad won the girls’ team title with a score of 345 to 387 for Hobbs. Neither Manzano and Eldorado had a full squad.
Senior Susan Shelley led the Lady Wildcats with a 99, but after discovering she had inadvertently played the wrong ball from the 16th hole on, she disqualified herself.
That took the team score down 15 strokes, but Lady Cats coach Jeff Fontanilla praised her honesty in self-reporting the mistake.
“Calling it on herself was a big thing for her to do,” he said. “It’s not very often you will see people do that.
The Cavegirls simply dominated on their home course, led by individual medalist Katy Caraway’s 79.
“Carlsbad is just way too strong for everybody,” Fontanilla said. “But the girls played hard.”
The Clovis boys team and Shelley have qualified for state Class 5A competition next Monday and Tuesday at San Juan Country Club in Farmington.
