Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ALBUQUERQUE — Guillermo Chavez fired his second-straight sub-par round in tournament play, helping Clovis finish third at the La Cueva Invitational golf tournament Monday at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course.
Chavez, a junior, shot a 2-under-par 70 and finished a stroke back of medalist Casey Caldwell of Albuquerque Academy.
He shot a season-best 3-under 69 at New Mexico Military Institute last week.
Led by Caldwell and Jesse Barnsley (70), Academy shot a 293 en route to a 13-stroke win over two-time Class 5A state champion La Cueva.
Junior Travis Reid tied for fourth with a 1-over 73 and senior Perry Jackson added a 76 as Clovis finished a stroke back of La Cueva at 306.
In the girls tournament, Clovis finished a distant fourth and failed to earn a state-qualifying score, which means the Lady Wildcats will have to finish in the top two at next week’s district tournament.
Senior Susan Shelley paced Clovis with a 93 and sophomore Carlee Snyder had a 100.
Albuquerque Academy placed three golfers in the top four and won the four-team tournament with a 355, which was 18 strokes better than runnerup Sandia.
