ROSWELL — Junior Guillermo Chavez shot a 3-under-par 69 to lead short-handed Clovis to a fourth-place tie in the New Mexico Military Institute Invitational golf tournament Thursday at NMMI Golf Course.
Roswell Goddard edged NMMI on a tiebreaker for the boys team title after both teams finished tied at 295. Clovis finished at 309 with Portales.
Junior Travis Reid added a 74 for the Wildcats, who were without senior Perry Jackson, who was attending another school function.
Paul Scheitnan of NMMI was a the medalist with a 4-under 68 while Chavez tied for second with Steve Zagone of Goddard at 69.
On the girls side, Clovis earned its first state-qualifying score with a season-best effort of 386.
Senior Susan Shelley and sophomores Carlee Snyder and Whitney Jones all shot 93 for Clovis. For Snyder and Jones, it was their best efforts of the season.
Kelli Velarde shot a 78 to led Goddard to an easy win.
Erika Willis added a 77 for Goddard, which finished 17 shots ahead of runnerup Carlsbad.
Portales netters sweep Clovis
PORTALES — Outside of Patricia Gallegos and Andrea Curry, Portales blanked Clovis in a boys and girls dual meet Thursday at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Complex.
Gallegos downed Hailey Quick 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles while Curry needed a pair of tiebreakers to beat Rachelle Self 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match.
Quick and Self earned a measure of revenge in doubles, downing their Clovis counterparts 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 as Portales beat the Lady Wildcats 7-2.
In the boys match, Portales didn’t lose a set in a 9-0 win.
