Roy Smith, 76, of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, in Amarillo.

He was born on April 12, 1927, in Downey, Calif., to Troy and Gladys Smith.

He worked as a truck driver and a heavy equipment operator for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Pacific Fleet in the Navy. Family members said he was always ready with a laugh and a good story, was a great father, a loving husband and a good friend to those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Smith; his wife, Lois Hull; and his wife, Hope Smith.

Survivors include a sister, Clara Auxier of Hesperia, Calif.; a daughter, Katherine Stewart of San Antonio; a son, Terry Smith of Lakewood, Calif.,; a step-son, Lenard Hogue of Porterville, Calif.; a long-time friend, C.L. Barnett of Portales; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Burial was at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
