Pinckney helps West win crown

CANYON, Texas — Clovis High senior Justin Pinckney scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds — including six on the offensive end — to help the West roll past the North 86-59 Saturday night in the boys championship game of the Golden Spread All-Star tournament at the West Texas A&M Event Center.

Amarillo High’s J.D. Lewis scored a game-high 19 points, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range, as the West blew out to a 42-18 halftime lead and cruised to victory. The North shot just 18 percent (7-for-39) in the first half.

Amarillo High’s Chris Hinz added 11 points and 14 rebounds en route to tournament MVP honors. Also named to the all-tournament team were Clovis guard Bud Willis, Layne Grant of Channing, Will Mitchell of Caprock and Jeffrey Browning of Miami.

Grant and Amarillo Tascosa’s Josh Spencer each scored 11 points for the North.

In the third-place game, the East ran away to a 118-96 victory over the South.

Girls — Tournament MVP Katherine Pigg of Valley scored 17 points and cleared 11 rebounds to lead the South to a 60-50 win over the North in the finals.

The East edged the West 56-52 for third place. The West stayed in the game despite shooting 9-for-46 from the field, making 34-of-54 from the free throw line.

Hereford’s Kali Gerber scored 12 points on 12-of-12 free throw shooting, while Erika Cook of Portales went 11-of-12 for 11 points.

Cook joined Pigg on the all-tournament team, along with Shannon Simdorn of Borger, Stephanie Sanders of Petersburg and Jennifer Paetzold of Shamrock.
