Sylvia M. Hintz, 95, of Portales, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Las Cruces.
She was born on Feb. 8, 1909, in House, Territory of New Mexico, to J.H. and Lou Clegg.
She never lived more than 50 miles from her family’s homestead. She graduated from House High School in 1927, and then received a teaching certificate from New Mexico Highlands College. She taught school in Taft. She moved to Las Cruces in September of 2003, where she was a resident of the Golden Mesa Community. She married Mid H. Peugh in 1928. After losing the farm in the depression, they worked 12 years in Tucumcari to buy a farm in Portales. She worked as a bookkeeper for Worley Mills and White Implement Co. She married Ernest H. Hintz of Portales in 1966. She was active in the World War I Veterans Organization, Women’s Club, United Methodist Church, and was nominated Pioneer of the Year in Roosevelt Co. in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; her second husband; and a brother, Travis Clegg.
Survivors include a son, Gene Peugh of Las Cruces; a daughter, Gwen Olsen, of Phoenix, formerly of Portales; a stepdaughter, Frances Bettina of Portales; nine grandchildren, Dean and Tony Peugh, Richelle Ponder, Steve and Jeff Olsen, Etta Kimble, John Bettina, Kathy Truelock and Elizabeth Page; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.
Dean Peugh will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the Portales United Methodist Church.
