Mr. Melvin Kizer, 67, of Hobbs, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1939, in Lingo, to Ivy and Bill Kizer.

He grew up in Lingo and Hiway. At age 16 he went to work in the oil fields around Hobbs. From 1960 until 1963 he served in the Army. In the early 1970s he moved to Arkansas where he worked on building projects as a heavy equipment operator. He married Mary McBride on Dec. 28, 1980, in Hope, Ark. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 4511 in Hope, Ark. Family members said he enjoyed fishing and often made trips to Arkansas to fish.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two children, Melvin Dwayne and Drenda Joyce Kizer.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Deborah Roten (and husband, Jerry) of Jackson, Tenn., Rebecca Winter (Patrick) of Elida, Nita Sheryl Kizer of Fort Smith, Ark., and Drenda Lynn Murzin (Michael) of Arlington, Texas; three step-daughters, Pamela Anderson (Steve) of Texarkana, Ark., Donna Ramsey (Scott) of Blevins, Ark. and Cheryl Smyth (Greg) of Roston, Ark.; a step-son, Greg McBride (Angie) of Prescott, Ark.; 10 grandchildren, Blake Roten, Summer, Trista, Autumn, Austin and Clayton Shrock, Jonathan Garrett, Sy, Juanita and Jamie Walker; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; a brother, Mack Kizer of Pep; and a sister, Peggy Kizer of Dora.

Jason Kizer and Shannon Kizer will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Causey Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are William, Shannon and Jason Kizer, Kenneth Musick and Gene and Dean Newberry.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
