Child, mother thrown from car

A 5-year-old boy and his mother, both of Clovis, were in critical condition Sunday at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after being thrown from a pickup truck.

Authorities said the pickup rolled 1 1/2 times near Clovis Airport.

Janice Lea, 39, was driving east from Clovis on 21st Street in a 1971 yellow Chevy pickup, when she veered into the west-bound lane and over corrected the vehicle, causing it to roll, said Officer Lance Bateman of the New Mexico State Police.

The victims were flown in separate helicopters to Lubbock, Bateman said.

“It was just those two in the car,” he said. “No one else was injured.”

Bateman said the mother and her son, Trent, were thrown clear of the vehicle when it rolled. A passerby reported the accident.

Battalion Chief Jerry Swenson of the Clovis Fire Department said officers were notified of the accident about 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
