Lady Cats host Los Lunas on Saturday
The Clovis High Lady Wildcats have drawn Los Lunas in a Class 5A regional playoff game set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Rock Staubus Gym.
Los Lunas lost on Saturday at top-ranked Las Cruces Mayfield 55-42 in the District 3-5A finals, the teams’ fourth meeting of the season. A couple of weeks earlier, the Lady Tigers went into Mayfield’s gym and handed the Lady Trojans their only loss of the season.
That forced a playoff to determine the district’s top seed, which Mayfield won on Monday at Los Lunas.
The Lady Cats (25-3) beat Eldorado 60-41 at The Rock on Saturday for the District 4-5A tournament title.
CHS announced Sunday that advance general admission tickets, costing $5 each as stipulated by the New Mexico Activities Association, will be sold in the athletic office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. CHS girls reserved seat ticketholders can purchase their same seat ($6) through Wednesday, with remaining reserved seats going on sale at 8 a.m. Thursday at the athletic office.
“They’re a real disciplined team,” CHS girls coach Miles Watters said Sunday of Los Lunas. “They’ve got good size and depth.”
Watters said senior guard Paige Powers leads the Lady Tigers, calling her a “high-profile” player. She was held in relative check Saturday night though, scoring eight points to match Clarissa Krum for team scoring honors.
“They’ve got a real talented guard who can handle the ball well and shoot it well,” Watters said of Paige. “We’ll have to play good basketball, but if we do I think we’ll be in good shape.”
Mayfield extended a 30-22 halftime lead to 15 points on Saturday, forcing the Lady Tigers into three turnovers and two missed shots early in the third quarter. Los Lunas then closed to eight points before the Lady Trojans put the game away.
Other 5A girls regional games, all set for 7 p.m., send La Cueva to Rio Rancho on Friday and Sandia to Gallup and Mayfield to Eldorado on Saturday.
