Joint Veterans Council

The Joint Veterans Council met on Feb. 4, 2004, at the Elks Lodge. Meeting called to order at 1900 hours by chairman Morris. Guests were John Fondrick N.M.D.O.Vs, Jim Smith D.A.V. Minutes of the meeting held on Jan. 7, 2004, approved as distributed.

Jim Couman (USMC) stated that Memorial Day ceremony would be held at the Clovis Carver Library. There will be family members of some of the veterans being honored on the pillars attending. The relatives will unveil the pillars. He suggested that we purchase flag pull downs for the ceremony at a cost of $72; motion by Jonnie Washington to purchase the pull downs, second by Ernie Aye carried. Jim stated that he has received more names for the pillars.

The Chairman stated that he will attend the city commission meeting on Feb. 19 and asked that we have a strong showing by our veterans.

Jim Smith spoke on a letter sent out by Representative Udall, which covered the veterans budget concurrent receipt and eligibility for service, connected disability compensation. He spoke on widows benefits; he urged writing our legislators on all veterans issues.

John Fondrick spoke on the town meeting that had been held and the actions being taken. On some of our wish lists he spoke on the veterans appreciation day to be held at the state capitol on Feb. 6, 2004.

Jim Smith commented that he had received a letter from the VA clinic here in Clovis, advising that effective March 15, 2004, Walk-ins are discouraged. Most patients of the clinic should have received a copy of this message.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1937 hours.

The next scheduled meeting will be at 1900 hours on March 3, 2004, VFW # 3280.
