Smyer foils Lady Blue again

LITTLEFIELD — Seventh-ranked Smyer’s size was a little too much for Farwell to overcome Tuesday night and the Lady Blue went down to a 39-35 defeat in a Class 1A Division I girls bi-district game.

Berry Andrews, a 6-foot-3 junior post, scored 13 points to lead the Lady Bobcats (25-6) into an area round game on Friday night against Stratford at a site to be determined.

Senior guard Kyra Christian scored 14 points for the Lady Blue (16-15), who lost to Smyer in the first round of the playoffs for the third time in four years.

“I really thought we were going to beat them tonight,” Farwell girls coach Doug Boyd said. “The girls never quit — they’ve got a lot of character and a lot of fight. But we never really put together a complete game this year, and you have to do that against good teams.”

Farwell trailed from the start, but pared a 12-point deficit early in the third quarter to 34-32 early in the fourth.

Down 38-35 with 30 seconds left, Christian’s potential game-tying 3-pointer was off the mark. After a Smyer turnover, the Lady Blue’s Micah Christian missed another 3-point attempt.

Smyer’s Michelle See hit 1-of-2 free throws with six seconds left to put it out of reach, and Farwell’s Hailey Grimes came up empty on a 3-point attempt as time ran out.
