Bernice Maxwell, 98, of Portales died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

She was born on July 30, 1905, in Lowell, Ark., to Alpha Mae and Fred Lee Maxwell.

Her family homesteaded in the Rogers community in 1906. She attended 11 years of schooling at Rogers and then came to Portales to finish her last year of school at Portales High School. During that time she boarded with a local family, the Hancocks. After high school Bernice attended beauty school and was a beautician in Portales for many years. She owned and operated the Maxwell Beauty Salon for more than 40 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Methodist Church. For the past several years she had been a resident of the rest home in Portales.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Calvin and Don Maxwell; a sister, Gladys Rogers.; three nephews; and three nieces.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Ruby Wilson, Chris Merrick and Lynda Hill, all of Portales, Velma Inman of Carlsbad and Wanda Stockton of Matador, Texas; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, including Joletha Heflin of Portales.

George Smith will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are all of her nieces and nephews.
