The following Eastern New Mexico University basketball players were recognized Monday for All-Lone South Conference player of the week honors:
Men
Jamaal Hunnicutt, 6-5 Jr. F, Amarillo
Week: Hunnicutt led the Greyhounds to wins over West Texas A&M (89-74) and Midwestern State (79-76), the latter game on the road. He compiled 20 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 blocked shots and 3 steals against WT, and just missed a double-double with 23 points and 9 rebounds at MSU, also adding one blocked shot and 4 steals.
Hunnicutt was 15 of 25 from the field and 11-of-17 from the free throw line in the two games. On Monday at WT, he shook off a bad shooting night from the field (2-of-11) to hit 7-of-8 free throws in overtime in a 77-72 win at Canyon, Texas. For the season, he is averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Coach Shawn Scanlan: “Jamaal had a hard time at the start of the year as the go-to guy. He’d had a chance to grow into his role the last two years playing with Cedric (Palmer, the 2003 South Player of the Year). … He’s a guy we depend on, and I think now he’s relishing his role.”
Women
Heather Brown, 5-7 Fr. G, Hereford, Texas
Week: Brown, who shared South women’s player honors for the week with Melanie Carter of Abilene Christian, led the Zias in scoring in both games as ENMU moved into a tie for the LSC South lead by winning at Midwestern State 76-72 and at Texas Woman’s 77-46. She scored 25 points against MSU and 15 against TWU while making 17-of-20 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Brown scored 10 points in the final four minutes against Midwestern, including a tie-breaking 3-pointer with just over a minute to go.
She had four rebounds in each game, and also collected five assists and two blocked shots in the two games.
Coach Dan Buzard: “I’m glad we got her. She wasn’t that highly recruited out of high school, but I think people are going to find out she was a steal. We expect a lot of her, even as a freshman. We expect her to give us a lot of leadership.”
