CCC celebrates Brown v. Board

Reporter's Notebook

Clovis Community College adopted a resolution Wednesday recognizing the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark decision that changed the face of education in America.

On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court announced its unanimous decision that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” The decision stated that separation of children in public schools for no other reason than race violated the 14th Amendment.

At Wednesday’s CCC board meeting, LaTayna Lowery, Director of Multicultural Affairs at the school, delivered a short message to the board.

“Let us make a pledge to be a model entity for all that is right,” she said about the college.

In recognition of the anniversary, both the American Association of Community Colleges and the Association of Community College Trustees boards have passed resolutions.
