Cats suffer double-OT loss at Coronado

LUBBOCK — The Clovis High boys basketball team had its second seven-game winning streak of the season snapped Friday night — and it was a heartbreaker.

Senior guard Anthony Durham scored on a jump shot with about 10 seconds left in the second overtime, and Lubbock Coronado outlasted the Wildcats for a 72-71 victory.

Clovis (14-2) jumped in front 19-6 after the first quarter, but the Wildcats had to rally from a five-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.

CHS led 66-63 with about 30 seconds left in the first overtime after a basket by senior Bud Willis, but Coronado tied the game with a three-point play in the closing seconds to force another extra session.

“We played real well offensively,” CHS coach J.D. Isler said. “Defensively we got kind of complacent (after building the early lead, but (Coronado has) a good team.

“We gave up too many points. We’re not used to giving up that many points. But we played with a lot of heart to come back after getting down by five points.”

Durham finished with 26 points for the Mustangs (13-8), while Keaton Harris added 12. Coronado hit 13-of-18 free throws for the game, while the Cats were 9-of-15.

Junior Dominique Easterlin matched Durham for game honors with 26 points for Clovis, but was hampered by leg cramps in the fourth quarter and the overtimes. Senior Justin Pinckney added 23 points.

Isler, who is three wins short of 300 in his high school coaching career, said he hopes the game helps the Cats as they prepare for the start of District 4-5A competition later this month.

“You’ve got to play good competition on the road to get better,” he said. “Hopefully, being in a tight situation like this will help us down the road.”
