Notes: The first of two area games for the Class 4A Pintos, who play at Portales Saturday ... Moriarty is coached Roswell native Randy Lykins, who said he tried to recruited former Clovis standouts Nelson Franse and Bubba Jennings when he was a grad assistant at the University of New Mexico. ... The Pintos are led by 6-6 senior P Kyle Banks (17 points and 12 rebounds) and 6-0 guards Jeff Anaya (13 points) and Josh Weiss (11 points). ... Both coaches expect an uptempo game. “I don’t know if we can match up well with Clovis,” Lykins said. “If we play well and shoot well I think we can be competitive.” ... ... The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season Friday in the Capital City Classic, losing to defending 5A champion La Cueva 59-47 in the semifinals. Clovis rebounded to finish third by routing Los Lunas 63-24. Senior P Mario Caswell put together back-to-back efforts of 16 and 17 points in the final two games of the tournament.

Notes: The Class 4A Harvesters snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday by beating Dimmitt 66-52. Junior Brittin East lit up the Bobcats for 16 points off the bench ... The Harvesters are led in scoring by 6-1 senior P Chance Bowers at 12 points while 6-3 senior Andy Rodgers chips in 10. ... The Harvesters have decent size, led by 6-7 sophomore Jarret Katara ... Pampa is coached by former Clovis Wildcat Jeff Reed(1992), who admits he’s nervous facing his alma mater. In his first year at Pampa, Reed also coached the freshmen boys three seasons at Yucca Junior High. .... Pampa plays Hereford Friday in its district opener. ... The Wildcats have three players averaging in double figures, led by 6-2 senior P Justin Pinckney at 14 points a game. Reed said he coached Pinckney as a freshman during summer league play.

Notes: The Class 4A Lady Harvesters are guard oriented and like to spread the floor, Clovis coach Miles Watters said. Pampa plays mostly zone, which should present a challenge for the Lady Wildcats. “We just haven’t seen that many zones,” Watters said. “Los Alamos played one against us and we struggled with it. We still want to get the ball into the post but we’re going to have to shoot better from the perimeter. ... Pampa is led in scoring by 5-7 Sr. guard Abbi Covalt at 8 points a game.
