Zias upended by Fort Lewis

PHOENIX — Despite having only one player reach double figures in scoring, Fort Lewis College defeated Eastern New Mexico 63-60 in the championship game of the Canyon Classic at Grand Canyon University.

Amy Mohr led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds, as the Skyhawks improved to 4-0 on the season. Fort Lewis got balanced scoring to go along with Mohr’s performance. Karen Thies had nine points, Kelly Becker and Jamie Pratt each had eight and Toni Kinsey and Amie Moulton scored seven apiece.

Laci Lee led the Zias with 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting with seven assists. Elizabeth Richards had 13 points, while Heather Brown added 11. Mika Robertson had seven points and led ENMU (2-1) with nine rebounds in only 15 minutes of action.

The Skyhawks won the game at the free-throw line, shooting 15 of 23 compared to a 12 of 14 night for the Zias.

The Zias will be on the road again on Friday, facing West Texas A&M in the first game of the Dr. Pepper Classic at Canyon, Texas.

ENMU 59, Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 57

At Phoenix, the Zias blew a 21-point lead early in the second half, then rallied from a five-point deficit in the final five minutes to beat the host Antelopes in the semifinals of the four-team Canyon Classic women’s tournament.

Lee of Portales scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for ENMU. Loren Scarlett added 11 points for the Zias, and Jereena Bosket and Kristi McGuire scored 10 points apiece.

After hitting just 1 of 8 shots from 3-point range in an opening win at Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday, the Zias went 5 of 9 in the first half against GCU to open a 36-17 lead.

The Lopes (0-1) came back with a 35-9 run, including 10 consecutive points to take the lead, and were up 52-47 with 4:50 left after a basket by Kelly McRee.

But Grand Canyon scored only five points the rest of the way. Richards put the Zias ahead 57-56 with 2:32 left on a layup off a feed from Bosket, and Scarlett’s two free throws at the 2:06 mark made it a three-point game.

Denica Davis, who a game-high 21 point, split a pair of free throws with 1:38 to go. But Grand Canyon misfired on three chances to tie the score in the remaining time.
