Barney Joe Smith, 73, of Bowie, Texas, a yard supervisor in the oil field, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Bowie Memorial Hospital in Bowie.

He was born on March 1, 1930, in Floyd.

He married Janice Ann Summers on May 25, 1985, in Bowie. He was of the Church of Christ faith. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he worked as a rodeo bull rider, for El Paso Natural Gas Company in Aztec, the Santa Fe Railroad in Clovis and Condor Drilling Company in Bridgeport, Texas. He retired in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Donnie Joe Smith.

Survivors include a son, William Ray “Billy” Smith (and wife, Lynne) of Cane Creek, Ariz.; a daughter, Sheryl N. Webb of Bowie, Texas; four stepchildren, Lena Tucker (James) and Connie Scott (James), all of Bowie, Pan Steele (Tim) of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Jimmy Conover of Mineral Wells, Texas; five grandchildren, Gerry Don Smith (Jennifer) of Fort Worth, Texas, Jeffrey Lynn Smith (Lisa) of The Colony, Texas, Joe Delinn Rickard (Virginia) and Wylie Wayne Webb, all of Bowie, and Brian Adam Smith of Cave Creek; eight stepchildren; three great-grandchildren, Victoria Shahan and Jason Ray Rickard, both of Bowie, and Roland Tyler Smith of The Colony; four step-great-grandchildren; a brother, James H. Smith (Doris) of Clovis; three sisters, Nancy Fry of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lois Barnard (Mike) of Waco, Texas, and Zelda Case of Bowie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2304 Midwestern Parkway, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308. Arrangements are under the direction of Fry Funeral Home of Bowie.
