Friendship Rebekah Lodge

Friendship Rebekah Lodge met Tuesday for its regular meeting. It was the 94th anniversary of the Lodge. Noble Grand Vicky Howard and Chaplain Robbie Wicker served sandwiches, chips and birthday cake. Wanda Scott and Melvin and Serena Goar talked about some of the things that happed at the Rebekah assembly in Deming.

National Education Association - Clovis

The club met on Oct. 25 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

“Quality Schools Begin With Us” was the theme for the fall council meeting. Clovis members attending the meeting were NEA president Cliff Martin, delegate Mary Jo Teel and delegate Rhonda Griego Roberts.

Dennis Van Roekel, vice president of the National Education Association, was the keynote speaker. He gave a speech titled “Power and Potential.”

The 2004 Joint Legislative Platform and Goals was adopted by members present.

Nominations for NEA-NM statewide region offices and RA delegates were presented.

There was a guest appearance by the Cat in the Hat. He was promoting NEA’s Read Across America project.

Fairfield Extension Club

The club met on Oct. 24. The meeting was called to order by Marie Wells. There were 14 members present. The council report was given. Wells read a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: “Tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift.” Wessie White shared a poem: “When I’m an Old Lady.”

The program was on potluck pleasers. Marie and Mary Winkles presented the program, explaining the importance of preparation and cleanliness in serving potluck meals. Door prizes were won by Murl Dennington, Ruby Jones, and Jean Hardin.

Prior to lunch, club members tacked a quilt for a community project. The next meeting is scheduled Nov. 14 at the Extension Building. New officers will be installed and Thanksgiving will be celebrated. Club members will also make coffee filter angels and clean the building.

Delta Kappa Gamma Zeta

The Delta Kappa Gamma Zeta chapter met at Cameo Elementary on Monday for a program on the Family Literacy Program. Presenters Kathi Shaw of Cameo and Susan Duran of Bella Vista explained that the program works with bringing parents and children together to learn. Children who are 4 attend three days a week at Bella Vista, Cameo, James Bickley, La Casita, Lockwood and Sandia Elementary schools.

Parents sign a contract to read with the child and do activities at home. Parents also participate in school activities and home visits. Packets of books, videos and activities are provided. There are field trips and links to community programs.

Refreshments were served by Patsy Camp, Roberta Johnson, Susan Johnson and Dorris White.

The business meeting held after the program was opened with the collect led by Diane Davis, president. Minutes were read by Camp and a treasurer’s report was read by Anna Marie Kolek.

The members voted to continue with a grant for Eva Marie Sanchez, a student at West Texas A&M University.

Molly Smith was welcomed as a transfer student member from Farmington.
